A lecture by Barrister Aleem Khan
The Islamic College Suhrawardi Lecture Series
In his lecture at the Royal Courts of Justice on 7 February 2008, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, explored the operation of shariah by Muslims in the UK. On 3 July 2008 Lord Phillips, who was Lord Chief Justice at that time, delivered a lecture at the East London Mosque in which he generally supported that the Archbishop's comments. However, the government has not engaged with their considered opinions.
Abdul Aleem Khan will examine this complex issue in depth with reference to the Prophetic practice in similar situations. He will also address the steps which Muslims can take in the West to resolve their marital and property disputes according to shariah without colliding with the law of the land.
Abdul Aleem Khan is a barrister who practices exclusively in the field of civil/family litigation; he specialises in Islamic law. He has appeared in court as an expert witness and frequently gives expert opinions to other lawyers in the field of shariah. Before transferring to the Bar eight year ago, he was a solicitor for twenty one years. He is originally from Pakistan (where family law is based on shariah) and practised law there for several years before migrating to the UK.
