Statement on ISIS

As Christians and Muslims from a variety of traditions we completely condemn the actions of ISIS in Iraq, especially in the Mosul area.

We specifically condemn the following actions – killing of innocent Iraqis, whatever their religion or religious tradition; destruction of Christian and Muslim holy sites; expulsion of the local population and all ultimatums to non-Muslims which offer a choice of conversion or death.

We highlight the positive history of coexistence of Christians, Muslims and other faith groups in Iraq since ancient times and the earliest days of Islam. We also highlight the fact that Mosul has been a significant Christian centre for 1400 years.

We mourn those who have lost their lives and pray with their families for peace and an end to violence.

We urge the international community to do all they can to return peace and stability to affected areas.
