Community Empowerment Champions

In March 2013 a series of consultations took place with representatives from different faith groups under the banner of the ‘Faith Minorities in Action’ project. These consultations provided a platform for faith practitioners to discuss the issues they face in their Places of Worship and put forward suggestions to help tackle these issues.  One of the key concerns raised was a lack of training for faith practitioners to help resolve the challenges their congregations and communities face.

In response Faith Minorities in Action has partnered with specialist training providers to create a tailored training programme to give faith practitioners the skills they need to help transform their communities for the better. We are now recruiting a hand-picked group of around 20 Community Empowerment Champions who have the dedication to undertake this training and use their newly acquired skills to strengthen their Places of Worship, and train others to do the same.

What is Faith Minorities in Action?

The Faith Minorities in Action project is jointly funded by the Department for communities and Local Government and the Muslim Charities Forum and is a unique opportunity for people working in Places of Worship to be equipped with the technical skills they need to make their communities a better place. The training will:

  • Enhance the organisational capacity of participating Places of Worship
  • Create a space for dialogue with people from different faiths
  • Enhance the ability and willingness of Minority Faith Groups to set priorities and take action to promote integration.

What will I get?

If you are successful in being selected as a Community Empowerment Champion you will undertake a training course of ten 2-day residential workshops with Champions from across England led by specialist trainers from late 2014 and March 2015 in a central location. The workshops will cover a range of topics  including Child Protection, Governance, Interfaith, Faith and Finance and Working with Young People. We will cover your accommodation and travel costs and certify your achievement on completion. We are working towards this being a formal qualification and will confirm in due course. Once you have completed the training we will support you to train others in your community to encourage integration and interfaith collaboration across the country.

Who are we looking for?

You must be in a position of leadership or responsibility within a faith-based organisation or minority faith Place of Worship, and you must also have some experience of delivering training, capacity-building and collaboration within a Place of Worship or faith-based organisation. Please get in touch with Saadia Mahmood on 020 8991 3332 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are unsure of whether you qualify.

You must attend all the sessions, complete any assessments and have the support of your Place of Worship to put your new skills into practice at the end of the course. We are asking that each participant’s Place of Worship or faith-based organisation contribute £250 to the cost of their training (worth over £5,000). £50 of this will be returned to you on completion of the course and £200 will be used to support Champions to carry out work in their community once they have completed the training. Being a Champion will be demanding but hugely rewarding. It will equip you with skills that will stay with you long after the training is over.
